Building Safety Nets to Help Children and Youth Succeed
(What does support really look like?)
“Have you every wondered why some kids are more likely to be successful
in school, their community, and in their relationships with others, while
others are more likely to struggle, and even fail?”
You may be surprised to find that the answer is simpler than you ever thought it could be. This informal, interactive session will use the concept of a dream catcher to give a visual of how we can provide support to the children and youth that we come in contact with each day. Participants will discuss the Forty Developmental Assets and how we can provide support for students so that they can be successful.

Topic: Healthy
School Team & Completing School Health Index
Congress recognizes that schools play a critical role in promoting student health, preventing childhood obesity, and combating problems associated with poor nutrition and physical inactivity. To formalize and encourage this role, Congress has also passed a law (P.L. 108 - 265). It states that each local educational agency participating in a program authorized by the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 1751 et seq) or the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 (42 U.S.C. 1771 et seq) shall establish a local school wellness policy by School Year 2006.
This session will give an overview of the two laws and Center for Disease Control’s (CDC’s) School Health Index (SHI): A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide that must be utilized by the Healthy School Teams that is a mandate of these laws. The session will also describe how this tool can be used to assess and improve school health policies and programs. The primary components to this policy include:
1. All Local Education Agencies (LEA’s) must have representative School Health Advisory Councils or Healthy School Teams which will be responsible for instigating healthy changes in their school districts.
2. Each Healthy School Team must take the lead in implementing the SHI with schools within their district. During the first year, each school must complete Modules 1, 3, and 4 at a minimum. In subsequent years, they should complete the other 5 modules. Having completed these modules in FY 06-07, they will be reviewed and others completed for a more complete plan of action for the school year 07-08.
3. After a brief overview the group will be slit into school groups to complete the above modules and action plans.
