Dover Elementary School Family Engagement Action Plan 2011-2012 School Year
1. Communication of: Grades: a. Parents receive progress report for grades K-5 after each 3 weeks. b. A calendar is included in the monthly student newsletter with the important dates parents will need to know. c. Report cards are sent home each nine weeks. Attendance: a. Attendance supervisor gives a grade level attendance award each nine weeks. b. Student recognition of perfect attendance at Honor Assembly Programs each nine weeks. c. Incentives for classroom attendance. d. Certificates from local businesses (i.e. McDonalds, Sonic, etc.) e. End of the year t-shirts, certificates and newspaper recognition. f. Letters/telephone calls to parents for not attending school. f. Truancy Review Board for missing excessive days.
Programs/Activities: a. Open House “Ice Cream Social” Night b. Honor Assemblies every nine weeks c. After School Reading Club (student/parents) d. After School Math Night e. Test Data: Parents receive copies of their child’s TCAP Test results. Annual Yearly Performance (AYP) is published. DES has implemented, in 3-5 grades, the STAR Reading Assessment program and Study Island. Parents receive TCAP writing assessment and TCAP test information booklets. Test scores profiles are included in the school newsletter.
Homework Policy: a. A copy of each teacher’s homework policy and a copy of the system- wide policy is available in the school office. b. Parents and students sign a school compact outlining responsibilities. c. Students have daily agendas. d. Weekly newsletters and/or study guides are sent home to parents.
2. Parent Involvement: Parent/Teacher/Community Organization: a. School Advisory Council (Strives for a parent representative from each grade level). b. SIP Committee is compiled of administrators, teachers, support staff, community members, and parents. c. “Partners in Education” Program. d. PTCO activities: yard sales, Student Health Fair, and School-Wide Book Fair. e. “Three 4 Me” Program - which encourages parent participation with their child’s education either at school or home. f. Fall Festival. g. Classroom field trips. h. Classroom volunteers.
3. Community Involvement: a. Open House b. Grandparents’ Day c. Incentives for Accelerated Math & Reading Programs d. Read Across America Day e. Career Day
4. Homework: Weekly newsletters/study guides are sent home to parents.
5. Discipline: a. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) has been implemented at DES.
6. Barriers to Involvement: a. Time – Many parents commute to larger cities for employment. *The “Three 4 Me” Program, voice mail and newsletters. b. Money – Cultural and socioeconomic differences. *Assistance with school supplies, free/reduced meals, clothing, shoes referrals to community services. c. Educational Level – Lack of parent education to help with homework. *After school tutoring, in-school tutoring. d. Parent Attitude About School – Previous personal experiences. *Nonacademic Activities: Festival, Open House. e. Safety – Concerns about safety in the area after school hours (more city and metropolitan school problems.) *Faculty & staff picture name tags, security cameras, security guard and lights. f. Language – As our local workforce changes, this could become a barrier. *ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher has been hired for Stewart Co. Schools. . g. Funding for student expenditures: *We supplement funding from fund raisers, community/business, and church donations.
