Dear Students:

Because you have worked hard, paid attention to your teachers, and done a good job on your projects, class assignments, and homework, your school has been named as one of the best in Tennessee.

In recognition of your success, Governor Bredesen will give your principal an award in a ceremony at the State Capitol on Monday, May 8.

Good job!

Your school’s TCAP scores have increased more than those of almost any other school in the State. They show that you are making a real effort and learning the things that will make you a smart and successful person.

Know that your good work has been noticed and is greatly appreciated.

Your parents, your teachers, and your fellow Americans want you to succeed.

Sincerely,

J. E. Stone, Ed.D.

President

April 25, 2006

Dear Parent,

On Monday, May 8, 2006, your school will receive the Education Consumers Foundation’s Value-Added Achievement Award. Please join us in Nashville for celebration of this very impressive educational accomplishment.

Unlike most education awards, this one is based solely on objectively measured achievement gain and accompanied by a $1,000 to $3,000 cash prize. The winners are among the most effective of Tennessee’s over 1300 elementary and middle schools in teaching reading/language arts and mathematics. If every school in Tennessee were similarly effective, Tennessee would be an unrivaled national leader in education.

The Education Consumers Foundation is a consumer organization for parents, taxpayers, and their elected representatives. We independently gather and disseminate educational information of use to consumers via our website: www.education-consumers.com. Please visit if you have questions about education research, policy, or practice.

Our reason for conferring these awards in Tennessee is that Tennessee’s Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) is arguably the most mature and sophisticated in the nation. It is one of the very few that enables consumers to see for themselves which schools are producing the best results. Our purpose is to give recognition to those schools and to encourage others to imitate them.

Within each of Tennessee’s 3 Grand Divisions, the top 3 elementary schools and the top 3 middle schools (including K-8s) were selected on the basis of their most recent 3-yr achievement gains. Schools with principals serving less than 5 years were excluded. See our website for added details about which schools were compared.

The ceremony will be held at the State Capitol in the old Tennessee Supreme Court chamber at 2:00 p.m. (Central Daylight Savings Time). Governor Bredesen is scheduled to make the presentation.

Room capacity is limited, so please RSVP to Mike Cohen at Mcohen@AckermannPR.com or 865-584-0550 to confirm your attendance.

Sincerely,

J. E. Stone, Ed.D.

President

This was a community achievement. Without our students, parents, teachers, administration, and business owners, this would not have been possible.
