Mrs. Tina’s Discipline Policy Discipline and classroom management is different in a developmentally appropriate Pre-K classroom in the fact that we are actually teaching students to identify feelings and appropriately deal with them. Teachers mentor and guide students through their social and emotional development by providing authentic, creative learning opportunities that will assist in developing self-control, self-discipline, self-esteem, and intrinsic (or self) motivation. A child who is intrinsically motivated to learn will learn for the pure simple joy of learning and will behave for the pure simple pleasure of acting appropriately. "Time Out" will be used when necessary, but we will try to work out most problems in a classroom meeting setting where we discuss the issue at hand and work together toward possible positive solutions. These rules are necessary for the most effective, safe learning environment for each and every child: Rule applies all day every day: Be respectful and kind to everyone. What does this rule really mean? Basically, treat each other with respect and kindness, share, take turns, use inside voices inside, listen and watch the speaker, be gentle… We also use a card system where students start the day with a green card, yellow card is a warning, orange card is all of the above along with a trip to the principal's office. Black card is reserved for severe behaviors, continual disruptions/breaking the rule(s), and defiance/non-compliance. Severe Clause: Physical violence, throwing things, or verbal threats will result in an immediate trip to the principal’s office and a note/phone call home. A treasure box is provided to students who do not get more than a warning (yellow card) in a week. They will be able to choose an item from the treasure box on Fridays. The treasure box is also used randomly for students who are "caught being good" or making extraordinary choices throughout the day at school. I will make notes in your child’s journal section often about your child’s behavior so please check that area daily and please comment in that same area if you have insights, comments, or concerns.
