TCAP
(Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program)

Students in Grades K-8 take the TCAP Achievement Test each spring. The Achievement Test is a timed, multiple choice assessment that measures skills in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Student results are reported to parents, teachers and administrators.

Dealing With Test Anxiety

Many students will experience anxiety before a testing situation.  This may result from feeling excessive pressure to do well, being afraid of failure, etc.  A certain degree of test anxiety is normal and may help students prepare more effectively, work more efficiently, and remain focused during testing.  Too much anxiety, however, can negatively affect performance.  The following strategies may assist parents helping to reduce a child's test anxiety:

  • Discuss the test openly and in a positive way.
  • Have realistic expectations of your child's performance while encouraging him/her to do their best.
  • Emphasize that the test is only one measure of overall ability.
  • Emphasize that test scores do not determine a person's worth.

On the Day of Testing

There are several things a parent can do to help a child do his/her best on the test.  The following items may help on the day of testing:

  • See that your child is rested and has time for breakfast.
  • See that your child arrives at school on time and is relaxed.  Avoid conflict on the day of testing.
  • Encourage your child to do the best work possible.
  • Let your child wear his/her favorite clothing (as long as it meets dress code requirements).
  • Encourage your child to think positively.  Help them develop an "I Can Do It" attitude.

Proctoring

Parents are needed to help monitor the administration of the TCAP test in all classes.  If you would be willing to help proctor, please contact your child's teacher.  You would need to arrive at DES no later than 8:00 and stay until 12:00.
